C6 History
One thing that is unique about the C6 Virtual Reality Simulator, VRS, is that it was the first and is currently the only six-sided virtual reality simulator in the nation. The inside of the simulator is a 10X10 virtual room that has screens on all six sides. It was originally opened in June of 2000 and is located in the atrium of Howe Hall with a design to look like a Cyclone.
Over the course of about 6 years the components became out of date inside the C6, so in 2006 Iowa State University® started a four million dollar renovation project ending in 2007. With the upgrade they upgraded with 24 top of the line Sony® projectors with a resolution of 16.7 million pixels per side which is more than double than any other Virtual Reality room in the world. Along with this upgrade they went up to 8.1 surround sound system and added an ultrasonic motion tracking system, which then the user can wear gloves or use other sensors and have the simulation react to their movements.
