As I love being a part of Iowa State I have gotten involved in many different activities and programs here at Iowa State that enjoy doing. Since I love the Iowa State campus so much I want to share this campus with other potential students so I am part of the Iowa State STARS, Student Admissions Representative, and help provide campus and residential tours to potential students. I enjoy this very much as I have learned a lot about Iowa State and also enjoy meeting people from all over the country that are working on an important decision on which college to go to.
I am also part of the Iowa FIRST LEGO League planning team. The main thing with this is I help plan a large State Championship robotics competition that is aimed for the ages of 9-14 years. At this event we have use 5 buildings on the Iowa State campus, have over 70 teams, more than 3,000 visitors come, and work with 300 volunteers and
more on the day of the event. This year the Championship event will take place on the 15th of January. Also with this we do minor help with attending the regional events that take place throughout the state of Iowa in December. In addition with being involved with this is that I have also helped with doing some minor outreach help for
the Iowa State College of Engineering. If you are interested more with the Iowa FIRST Lego League visit http://www.isek.iastate.edu/fll or in FIRST in general at http://www.usfirst.org. If you are interested in volunteering with our event please go to the Iowa FLL page and click on the registration page.
I am also involved with volunteering in many other ways including volunteering at the World Fest event held in St. Louis, MO, volunteering at the high school level FRC® as a Website Evaluator at five regionals and the World Championship, and for the 2012 FRC season a mentor for FRC Team #2194 in Fond Du Lac, WI(http://www.fondyfire.com)
Another organization I was involved with during the 2010-2011 school year was holding the position of Director of Information and Technology for the Iowa State University Inter-Residence Hall Association(IRHA). If you do not know what the IRHA is it is a student-body government for the Department of Residence at Iowa State University and represents all the residence hall students. With our parliament meetings we discuss and make decisions on items that reflect and also will affect all of the residence students in addition to providing funding for items, events, clubs, and more that will be of benifet to the residence hall students as well. For more information about the Iowa State Inter-Residence Hall Association visit our website at http://irha.iastate.edu.
A club I have been involved with for a couple years is the ISU Mountaineering and Climbing Club (stuorg.iastate.edu/mcc). Yes a mountaineering and climbing club in flat Iowa but what that means is we get to travel all over the country to do what we want to do. We have had trips to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in Arkansas, to a couple places in Missouri, Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
We also do Ice Climbing which the most convienient place is climbing on a couple Silos in Iowa that they freeze over. We have done a mountaineering related trip out to Colorado and summitted a couple 14ers in summer 2011. We are also currently in the training process on climbing Mount Rainier in Washington State in the first week of May, which will be a big trip for us. The nice thing about the club is that you do not need any technical experience, camping experience or any experience at all to join, just a open mind to learn and have fun, oh forgot one of our rules, don't die!.
We have many safety features and plans in place so all of our trips are carried in a safe manor and have all the technical gear you need so you do not even have to go out and buy all that expensive equipment.
I luckily have had experience before being a part of the club and also have gone out on my own climbing expeditions with friends around Minnesota including both rock and ice climbing.
